The days of the charismatic leader with all the answers are well behind us – and what a relief for those burdened by such unrealistic expectations – but the debate about effective leadership continues. The latest contribution is As One: Individual action, collective power, the work of Australia-based Mehrdad Baghai and James Quigley, global CEO of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. As One is the outcome of a two-year global project by Deloitte to explore new thinking in collective leadership. Through their research, Baghai and Quigley identified at least eight distinct collaborative leadership models built around drivers such as innovation and operational efficiency. The common threads across all models, the authors say, is the ability to align people, purpose and productivity – ‘as one’.
