Finding purpose

Organisations, just like individuals, need a strong sense of purpose to become great. Tapping that shared purpose enables leaders to mobilise people in a way no mission or vision statement ever could, so the pressing task for leaders – perhaps their paramount task – is to help identify the organisation’s purpose. So argues Nikos Mourkogiannis in his book, Purpose: The starting point of great companies. “Purpose”, he writes, is “a choice to pursue your destiny…It’s the answer you give when you’re asked for the right – as opposed to the factually correct – answer.” As well, it provides the “emotional certainty that makes the prolonged openness of mind required for innovation easier.”
